The People’s Eco Agri Centre (PEACe) Project will have three massive areas of impact on Vancouver Island. First, to address Vancouver Island’s extremely limited landfill space, it will bring in a unique waste management and disposal system to decrease the amount of waste going into local and US based landfills. This specialized waste management system also has the capability to generate steam energy from the waste disposal, which will be used to power a land-based, closed-loop fish farm in the second phase of the project. Few people know that the fresh food supplies on the Island cover only 3-5 days of consumption. This is why the PEACe Project will build an eco-friendly, water efficient Recirculating Aquaculture System to supply shrimp, salmon and black cod to local businesses and residents of the Island. Because the system is a highly controlled indoor environment, it eliminates the problems that outdoor farms face, like parasites, bacteria and illness, producing healthier, antibiotic free fish, with a higher nutritional value than other farmed varieties. Finally, the PEACe Project will be housed on the grounds of Vancouver Island First Nations. It is the project’s goal to bring greater social and economic equality to the community, which currently has a 34% unemployment rate. The PEACe Project will provide approximately 80 permanent fulltime jobs, with onsite training and practicums, to increase skill transfer and career development.
